Covid-19 – How to keep safely buying and selling boats

safely buying and selling boats

Despite the Covid-19 crisis, the brokerage market is very active, with a general increase in interest in boating at most levels. Find out how we are working to keep you safely buying and selling boats below.

Looking for a new way to enjoy family holidays away from the crowds?  Want an office with a view or dream of escaping the land and living afloat?  Decided now is the time to stop chartering and start ownership?

Whatever the reason, our team are here to offer help and advice at all stages of your journey. From identifying the right type of boat, to information on ongoing costs and where to moor, just ask. With travel abroad difficult and social distancing measures, getting afloat could be a great way to make memories! We are here to help keep you safely buying and selling boats. Why not check out our current brokerage listings, or contact our team for expert advice.

Selling to keep afloat

We understand that for some boat owners now may be a difficult time financially and that funds currently invested in boating may be needed elsewhere. Depending on location, we may be able to work with marinas and yards to reduce financial stress.

Due to our position within the marine industry, it may be possible for us to arrange deferred berthing or storage charges, secured against the future sale of your boat. If this is something that could help you please contact us immediately. We can work with you to minimise costs and find the right buyer for your boat as swiftly as possible.

To help further, we have put our 2020 minimum commission increase on hold until further notice, saving £250 off our lowest value listings, and deferred the upfront fees for sole brokerage listings below £10,000 until your boat has sold. Unlike many other brokerages, all of our listings are advertised on Yachtworld, the biggest used boat sales portal in the world, together with other premium locations throughout Europe, regardless of their value. Depending on location, we will be offering great value ‘quick spruce up’ boat cleaning to help get your boat ready for the market. Clarke & Carter Sealed Bid Boat Auctions can be a powerful tool to ensure a sale, with a number of boats sold this way recently. Listings feature on a dedicated auction page and get increased marketing on social media during auctions to boost visibility.

Our team are already busy with new listings, act now to get your boat on the market ready for the rush when viewings are allowed. Information on our services and downloadable forms are available on our Sell Your Boat page, or contact your local office for immediate assistance.

Buying without viewing

Despite the difficulties buying without viewing, we are still successfully selling boats where access is possible. We already have a number of boats sold subject to surveys, whilst some have been sold on an ‘as is, where is’ basis. Others have been secured on extended contracts, ready to move forward as soon as it is safe to do so. If you are keen on a boat don’t wait until it is too late, contact us to secure it, or book your viewing slot in advance. We will be making viewing appointments as soon as restrictions are eased and will be contacting registered customers in order. See below for some of the ways we are helping buyers and sellers move forward safely buying and selling boats:

  • On-demand video tours and 360 degree images are available for more boats every week
  • PDF contracts using Adobe Sign allow easy completion at a distance, minimising physical contact and travel
  • Extended contract timeframes with flexibility for delays getting boats surveyed or lifted are now possible

What will happen when viewings are possible again

When lockdown restrictions are lifted, we need to do as much as we can to keep everyone safe. As such, we have introduced the following new temporary company policies ready for when the current lockdown restrictions are eased:

  • Our offices will be manned by only one team member at a time until social distancing measures are lifted
  • Other team members will either be working from home, or out taking pictures and video tours
  • Keys will be sanitised between all viewings, and we will be cleaning contact areas like door handles regularly
  • All viewings are by appointment only at all locations, so we can keep buyers and owners safe
  • Only one set of customers will be allowed at our offices at any time
  • If you would prefer not to enter our office just say, we will come outside to help
  • Our offices will have clear visual reminders of social distancing to help reduce any chance of contact

In addition, if any owners or buyers consider themselves to be at heightened risk, please tell us. We can create a schedule to allow 72hrs between any people being on board. If you are self-isolating aboard your boat please also tell us, so we can avoid accidental contact. If you are looking at boats with other brokers, check and see that they have similar measures in place.

Finally, the team at Clarke and Carter would like to wish you all good health and thank you for your continued support both now and across the years.
